Downtime for Hard Disk maintenance

One of the disks in the raid was showing that it had some errors.
Normally I would have put this disk into a spare machine to do disk
maintenance, but I didn't have a spare machine that had the right
controller (My desktop is SATA and both disks in the server are ATA).
So I ran the disk maintenance on the server itself, bringing the
various Internet servers down: calcutta (flora.org), hugli (Mail, DNS)
and newdelhi (digital-copyright.ca, etc).
